SMMA is our family philosophy of teaching and training in the Martial Arts and I do not claim to understand it all but I am willing to learn.
Surrett Mixed Martial Arts is Karate, Ju-jitsu, Judo, Boxing, Kick boxing all in one.
Which was founded by Clyde Surrett in 1995 and
Yudansha Surrett has been involved in the Martial Arts for over 19 years.
Over the years I have learned a lot and SMMA is my way of teaching what I have learned to my family and closest friends.
At this time I teach 10 months a year at Community High School (BCS-East), Plus I train and teach under the auspices of Shihan Carl Wilcox (8th Dan) at CMA-USA
"A National Center for the Martial Arts". I am very Grateful for what Shihan has shared we me over the years as well.
Not only is he my teacher but a great friend as well. Shihan is one of the most Knowledgeable men in the Martial Art I
have ever Known.
About Clyde Surrett
Clyde started Karakido/Akiakai Karate in 1989 under the Sensei Bohannon and
in 1991 was promoted to Black Belt in Karakido/Akiakai Karate
which was a mix of Aikido, Karate, American Kick Boxing, Boxing and Judo.
In 1992 our school closed due to Leicester Hwy projected, and we merged with
Sensei John Thomas who was a Shorei and Shuri Stylist. It was about this time I
was starting my own family and did not have much time to train so I was inactive
with regular dojo attendance, I started teaching in my back yard, and my students backyards.
one of which is Bryan Franklin. By the beginning of 2005 I started training again at CMA under
Shihan Carl Wilcox, who is still my main teacher, and after many years of training I earned the rank of Shodan
in the USA Karate Fed, and United States (USA) Martial Arts Federation.
Where it Began:
Surrett Mixed Martial Arts officially got started in 1994-95 in the back yards of my students homes.
SMMA is a mixer of all that I have learned in the past 18-20 years of study.

Programs I Have Started:
In 2005, I started The Martial Science Program at Buncombe Community School .
I had a wonderful group of teenagers who were very interested in the
Martial Arts. I ran the program for 9 weeks and I had some good feedback from
the teachers. My students grades had come up and there attitude on life was changing.
The Martial Science will continue this year at Buncombe Community School. This is our
3rd year teaching the Martial Arts at Buncombe Community School soon to be renamed the Community High School,
My only wish is that
with the Admin change we can still move forward with the Martial Arts Program.
We will continue to teach that the Martial Arts is a means to reach the students curiosity, perseverance, and determination and to mold
it in a productive manner. Using Karate/Martial Arts, we can equip the students with life
skills and help train them to over-come their limitations. The Martial Science Program teaches
respect and courtesy, as well as self-defense techniques. The Program will help aid in the building
of self-confidence and direction. We encourage the student to study, think, and question,
and gain a real appreciation for their potential. A vital element of the Martial Science
Program is discipline. The principals and values of discipline are embodied in the required
dedication, perseverance, determination, self-control, concentration, and respect.
Earnest practice under a dedicated and proficient teacher is the key to successful training
and a successful life.
In Late 2007 I founded Buncombe Combat Karate Association which is an Free online Martial Arts
Support and Educational Group, we offer a free on line coarse in Japanese, knife training, and free
life membership certificate. The Buncombe Combat Karate Association has members all over the USA, and from around the World.
